Sunshine For Your Teeth

Sunlight is good for all living things. Plants need sunlight to photosynthesize food and grow. Similarly, our bodies convert sunlight into vitamin D which feeds our bones and may be critical in helping us keep our teeth long term.

Recent studies have shown a link between vitamin D deficiency and tooth loss. Anecdotal evidence suggests that patients with gum disease are almost always deficient in vitamin D. As well as strengthening bones and teeth, vitamin D also plays a role in reducing inflammation. A study conducted by Boston University Dental School and Tufts University Nutrition Research Center found the control group that took calcium and vitamin D supplements over a three year period were 40% less likely to lose one or more teeth.

The best way to get the vitamin D that your body needs is to expose your skin to sunlight. Fifteen minutes of unfiltered sun (no sunscreen) twice a week should synthesize a healthy amount of D in your system. However, this isn’t always possible due to many factors including weather, skin tone, sun sensitivity and environmental factors so look to food sources or supplements to pick up the slack.

  • Tuna fish
  • Cod Liver oil
  • Eggs
  • Fortified Milk and Cereal products.
